Artist Statement

Michael Brohman received a Bachelors of Science in Design with an emphasis in Ceramics from Colorado State University in 1991. He began his graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and completed his degree at the University of Colorado/Denver, earning a Masters of Architecture in 1995. Michael has been on the faculty at the University of Colorado/Denver since 1996 in the Visual Arts Department as an Instructor of Sculpture. He has also taught summer courses at the Burren College of Art in County Claire, Ireland and at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden, Scotland.

In 2003 he was awarded an Artist Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts. Additionally, he received a Faculty Development Grant and has twice been recognized for an Excellence in Teaching Award. Michael has exhibited his work in sculpture gardens and galleries nationally and internationally. Selected outdoor exhibitions are the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, FL, Ford Sculpture Park in Vail, CO, and Platte Forum in Denver, CO. Selected gallery exhibitions include the 7th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition, Burren College of Art, Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, Lander Art Center, and Foothills Art Center. Michael is a member of Pirate- A Contemporary Art Oasis, an artist cooperative gallery in Denver.

Although the form and materiality of his work varies, it consistently draws from the idea of observing, interpreting and recording human behaviors and beliefs. His work explores the ways in which experiences influence us and how we form identities.
