Dan Root

"Art is longing.  You never arrive, but you keep going in the hope that you will.” – Anselm Kiefer

The Artist

Dan Root focuses on analog black & white photography for his artwork, drawing on 30 years of traditional darkroom experience.  Pushing the boundaries of the medium, he creates unique images expressed through creative printing techniques, occasionally using photo oil paints to add color.  Root uses a variety of 35mm & 120mm cameras for his work, favoring a vintage Hasselblad 500C and a Zeiss Ikon Contessa LK rangefinder, both from the 1960s.

“The artwork I’ve created in the last few years has been a combination of still-life studio with images that I take along whichever theme I’m currently working on.  Increasingly, my work is leaning toward experimentation, using the tools in the darkroom in non-traditional ways. I like the idea that my images appear digital and modern, yet many are created in the studio and darkroom and none of them have a computer involved.”

Root has exhibited his photography in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Greenwich (CT), Zurich (Switzerland), Canberra (Australia) and now Denver.
