Thomas Carr: All that We Leave Behind
Thomas Carr Artist Statement:
ALL THAT WE LEAVE BEHIND is an exploration of time, memory, family, and place. In October of 2025 my mother turned 90 and as a gift to her I collected and digitized hours of old 8mm family movies dating from around 1940 to 1969. As I watched the old films, I began to capture random still frames and it was almost like conducting street photography, but in a fashion where you can freeze time and move it back and forth. The myriads of memories in these films were amazing and it made me think about the many abandoned places that I have explored. I saw a universal connection between what I was seeing in these historic family images and my photography, so I decided to create this visual narrative that combines the two to find deep historical meaning and nostalgia through art. The exhibition will feature photographic prints and film projections in an immersive environment.
My artwork is a synthesis of photography and archaeology. As a young photographer in the 1980s, I found myself drawn towards making images of places with subtle indications of a past human presence. This led to my pursuit of a career in archaeology, which has allowed me to visit many significant historic sites and associated landscapes. Having been trained in photography, I endeavor to document the essence of these places in visual terms. This subtle sense of presence is what I seek in my photography. I’ve applied this approach to a variety of projects over my 40+ year career. I have two major types of portfolios that I create – these are documentary photography, typically large or medium format, as well as more impressionistic/abstract composite work that draws from film and digital photographs. My artistic influences include photographers Eugene Atget, Clarence John Laughlin, Linda Connor, Edward Weston, Diane Arbus, Paul Caponigro, Fay Godwin, and Francesca Woodman; as well as filmmakers Ingmar Bergman, Werner Herzog, Akira Kurosawa, and Andrei Tarkovsky.
